Motivation is fundamental to working out. Working out requires work and work requires motion. You have to get off the couch to do the work! You can always do more than you think you can do and now is the time to get yourself in motion! What is the thing that can stimulate you toward action? Belief that you can do it is how it starts.
BELIEVE…
The foundation of motivation is belief. There’s no argument against that. In fitness, to achieve your goals, it certainly starts with a belief that you can. As a fitness professional, nothing is more upsetting than to listen to someone saying they need to “think about it” before they begin a fitness program. What is there to think about? Choose to BELIEVE that you can, and begin that program today! Stop procrastinating. A good friend of mine and the “guru” of fitness membership recruitment, as I call him, John Paul Yersick, or “JP”, once told me that the sworn enemy of achievement is procrastination. In my view, procrastination is just a fancy word for laziness. Don’t be lazy!
DO…
Next step is to actually DO SOMETHING! Take action. Find the program that will be the most effective tool to get you to your goal in a safe, timely, and efficient manner. “Do” consistently and use a method that will allow you to measure progress.
As a trainer, one of my biggest pet peeves is the trend toward, let’s call it hyper-variety of types of exercises within any one fitness genre. How can you measure progress if you are told to do a different workout with different exercises every time you come to the gym? That is bad advice. Just know that you need to DO a program consistently every week and stay within a reasonable pattern of “sameness.”
ACHIEVE…
If you DO a routine with relentless regularity, then you will get to the next step, which is to ACHIEVE. Don’t bask in the glory for too long, though.
Now it’s time to…
REPEAT!!!
This is the fitness cycle of success, for sure. It sounds so easy, but we all know better. It’s simple but not easy. Of course, as the old saying goes, “Nothing in life worth having is easy.” True that! Just keep repeating to yourself, BELIEVE, DO, ACHIEVE, over and over again.
Never stop!
BELIEVE, DO, ACHIEVE…REPEAT.
