I was speaking to a group of new HOTWORX franchisees last Friday on our franchisee Orientation Day and I brought up the fact that I am in Park City for a family ski vacation this week. That O Day, as we call it, inspired me to write this article. I have written about this topic in the past, and I will continue to write about it because it is important to your fitness. When planning your next vacation, you should consider a fitness component for the trip. And, then you should train hard at your local HOTWORX with the goal of a successful performance on your vacation. It works like magic!
When you plan an activity, such as skiing, or hiking to the top of a mountain, for example, you can find a spectacular place to visit and to elevate your level of fitness. Consider it an opportunity to explore this beautiful planet. In addition to HOTWORX, I am actually using my ski trip as training for my next adventure which will be another mountain to climb next month. You need strong thighs to climb a mountain and there’s no better training for quads snow skiing. Snow skiing is a super charger for quads. I would also add that HOTWORX Isometric workouts build strength in the lower body as well if you are looking at an activity that requires lower body conditioning. The flexibility training of each of the isometric workouts and especially Hot Stretch add more pliability to your muscles as well. The infrared sauna heat stress on the quads is a very anabolic (muscle building) practice. You always get MORE from your WORKOUT in the sauna!
Skiing is a very demanding sport, and obviously you can perform better and have more fun on the slopes when you are in shape. I was telling the Orientation Day group how much I believe in the importance of taking trips that involve a physical activity goal. When you plan for vacations that involve a fitness event, it will motivate and inspire you to better workouts in the sauna, and you will come home from vacation in even better shape than when you arrived!
No doubt, planning a vacation that involves physical activity can be a powerful motivation tool for maintaining a consistent fitness routine. Knowing that you have an upcoming trip that requires endurance, strength, and flexibility—whether it’s hiking through a scenic trail, cycling along coastal roads, or skiing in the mountains—can encourage you to stay committed to daily workouts. This type of goal-oriented training not only enhances your overall fitness level but also adds excitement and purpose to your routine, making exercise feel less like a chore and more like preparation for an adventure. Additionally, staying active on vacation allows you to fully enjoy the experience, keeping your energy level high while boosting confidence in your physical abilities. By aligning your fitness efforts with an exciting travel goal, you create a cycle of motivation that keeps you engaged, challenged, and inspired to maintain a healthy lifestyle long after the trip is over, and leading up to the next fitness adventure.
There is science, and common sense, to explain why this works. “According to sport psychology research, when individuals set challenging and precise goals they are more likely to enhance performance outcomes compared to easy, vague goals. One reason for this is when you set a long-term outcome goal, you are immediately creating expectations for yourself.” (1) Use your vacation as one of your fitness goals, and repeat in different locations each year. Challenge yourself.
One last note. If your vacation has a fitness component, then you will avoid excessive drinking and over-eating that can sometimes leave you feeling not so great when you get home. If you want to elevate your fitness program, plan a trip, and make it a fitness vacay!
