A driver should never drive without a speedometer. A pilot can’t fly without an altimeter, and a scuba diver should never dive without a dive watch.At the very least, any serious workout person should include the use of a reliable measuring tool for the two most important fitness metrics, heart rate and calorie burn. The challenge is for that person to find the right fitness tracker for them. It’s personal.As with many devices, fitness trackers are not based on an exact standard and no two formulas are the same. Fitness trackers are created to record performance based on formulas that interpret data that they collect from your activity.If you are looking for the right device, be diligent and do your homework. There are so many to choose from and your search can be daunting for sure.What’s important is that you settle in on a device that you like and that you trust. Once you have that device, keep it for a while and use it to measure your progress.You have to remember, though, that no device will give you 100% accuracy. Most of the more popular brands such as Apple Watch, FitBit, Polar, Garmen and even Timex are accurate to within 10-15% for calorie burn according to reports. It needs to be accurate “enough” and you have to trust it because you will develop a relationship with your fitness tracker in the same way that have a relationship with your phone and your laptop. Don’t set yourself up for a device divorce by making the wrong choice!Personally, I would not use a tracker that did not have a really good heart rate monitor. Heart rate is probably the most important piece of the data puzzle when you are trying to measure energy expenditure!In life, You Get What You Track…
